Who We Are as United Methodists
As a United Methodist congregation we hold to the historic doctrines of the Christian faith. The three main books that inform our faith and practices are the Bible, the Methodist Hymnal, and the United Methodist Book of Discipline. We are passionate about our faith and feel strongly about our Christian convictions. However, we are willing to ask questions, to wrestle with difficult issues, and to do so with grace and compassion. We also believe in demonstrating love and respect in all things. In fact, these three points, emphasized by John Wesley and Methodists throughout history, form the core of our beliefs:
- In essential beliefs — we have unity. (Meaning we share the beliefs of traditional Protestant Christians) “There is one Body and one Spirit…there is one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father of us all…” Eph. 4:4-6
- In non-essential beliefs — we have liberty. (Meaning we show freedom and not rigidity in regard to non-essentials of the faith) “Accept him whose faith is weak, without passing judgment on disputable matters… Who are you to judge someone else’s servant? To his own master he stands or falls… So then each of us will give an account of himself to God… So whatever you believe about these things keep between yourself and God.” Romans 14:1,4,12, 22
- In all our beliefs — we show charity (or love). (Meaning we seek to show love in our relationships together) “…If I hold in my mind not only all human knowledge but also the very secrets of God, and if I have the faith that can move mountains — but have no love, I amount to nothing at all.” 1 Cor. 13:2
As Methodists we have always been known for our emphasis on a personal faith in Jesus Christ that is lived out in concrete ways in the world. We also value well-informed and passionate preaching, worship that is Christ centered and demonstrates a living faith, and small groups where people can grow in their faith and in their service to Christ.
